GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a chronic digestive disorder when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn, chest pain, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Luckily, there are treatments available to help lessen the symptoms of GERD. With proper treatment, most people with GERD can live relatively symptom-free lives. If you think you might have GERD, it’s essential to see a Frisco GERD specialist. They can help diagnose the condition and develop the right treatment plan for you. Keep reading to learn more about GERD and how it’s treated.

    Antacids

Antacids are medications that can help relieve heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. They come in tablet or liquid form, and they’re typically taken after meals or when heartburn symptoms arise. Common brands of antacids include Tums, Rolaids, and Maalox. Antacids are generally safe and effective, but they may cause side effects like diarrhea, constipation, or upset stomach.

    H2 blockers

H2 blockers are a type of medication that can treat GERD. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. This can help relieve heartburn and other symptoms of GERD. H2 blockers are available over the counter and by prescription. Common over-the-counter brands of H2 blockers include Zantac 75 and Pepcid AC. Prescription-strength H2 blockers are also available.

    Proton pump inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a type of medication that you can use to treat GERD. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It can help relieve heartburn and other symptoms of GERD. PPIs are available over the counter and by prescription. Common over-the-counter brands of PPIs include Prevacid 24HR and Prilosec OTC. Prescription-strength PPIs are also available.

    Linx Surgery

In some cases, surgery may be recommended to treat GERD. One type of surgery used is called Linx surgery. This procedure involves placing a small ring of titanium beads around the lower end of the esophagus. It creates a barrier that prevents stomach acid from flowing back up into the esophagus. Linx surgery is usually reserved for people who haven’t had success with other treatments. It’s a minimally invasive procedure, and most people can go home the same day.

    Nissen Fundoplication

Another type of surgery sometimes used to treat GERD is Nissen fundoplication surgery. This procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower end of the esophagus. It strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter and prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus.

    Lifestyle changes

Several lifestyle changes can help improve GERD symptoms. These include avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, avoiding eating late at night, losing weight if necessary, and quitting smoking. Making these lifestyle changes can help reduce or eliminate the need for medication. You should also avoid lying down for three hours after eating and elevating your head while you sleep.

In summary, GERD is a chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn, chest pain, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Luckily, there are treatments available to help lessen the symptoms of GERD. With proper treatment, most people with GERD can live relatively symptom-free lives.
